Summary[]
As the news sinks in, Scholar talks about this latest development with Alistair and Raquel. They learn that the application process is just a formality. Students can choose to skip out on the proceedings, but it provides a perfect opportunity to get ahead in the field of their choice; a lot of big name industry professionals and celebrities view the proceedings. However, the proceedings themselves are incredibly private, so the students have to sign waivers and non-disclosure agreements. Scholar themself only knows the competition even exists because the academy announces it as well as posting pictures of the winners to the school's official social media accounts. Everything else has been a complete mystery, leading to rumors about the whole thing being a sham.
Tadashi butts in to say that Lady Arlington will announce the particulars later today, and hints that this year will be very different. After he enters his and Alistair's dorm for a quick nap, Raquel leaves to do some training in the Gym while Scholar reenters their dorm to get a bit more sleep themself.
Later during their science class, Scholar learns more about the competition from either Tegan Novák and Ellie Collins, Axel, or Tadashi. Lady Arlington stops by at one point to announce that, this year, the student interviews and the department showcase will be livestreamed to the general public. Furthermore, the public will vote to decide who wins this year's department and individual prizes. Because of this, Lady Arlington suggests the class take the time to interact with departments outside of their own in order to gain new insights.
As Lady Arlington departs, Scholar stress levels rise. They talk to Alistair as they walk to the gym, and the advice Alistair gives helps calm their nerves somewhat. Taking Lady Arlington's suggestion, they walk around the school, interacting with the other department heads as well as the students they have met so far. Once that is done, they head to the room where their own department is going to meet.
During practice, Scholar will get an idea that may end up being a huge risk. Whether or not they decide to go through it, the department practice will continue for a few hours more until the head of the department dismisses the class, urging them to prepare for the interviews. Scholar moves to the Garden where they decompress for an hour before making their way to the Auditorium.
The interviews are ordered by ranking and since Scholar does not have one yet, they get to see their other classmates' interviews first. Before they know it, though, Scholar's turn arrives. Lady Arlington's expression falters for instant upon seeing Scholar, but her polite smile never wavers. Thankfully, the interview goes smoothly, Scholar answering her questions as honestly as they can.
When the interviews are finally over, Scholar is not interested in learning how the public has been voting, so they begin to walk to their dorm. However, they do not make it past the main hallway when Ellie, Alistair, Tyler, and the rest excitedly rush up to them. They tell Scholar to check the outcome of the voting, and when they do, they are shocked to learn that they are in third place. As Scholar joins the group back to the dorms, they feel a little less alone.
Plot[]
Chaos erupts as soon as the news leaves Tadashi's mouth. Despite the early hour, there are students who are already preparing for the day ahead. Axel is not one of them; he returns to his dorm to get some shut eye, a sentiment Scholar shares.
That is when their sleep deprived brain finally catches up: the Department Competition is here. The only thing Scholar knows about it is that, once a year, the academy has each of its seven departments work on one big group project. The presentations are done in front of an audience of important industry professionals and even celebrities. Since such important people are privy to the proceedings, it provides the perfect opportunity for students to show off their talents and potentially get ahead in their preferred field. It is because of this opportunity that they even decided to apply for Arlington.
Scholar notices Raquel and Alistair excitedly chatting not too far from their dorm. They are curious as to why they need to fill out a form. Alistair explains that practically every student participates, so the applications are more about signing non-disclosure agreements and waivers. Scholar is aware that the proceedings are very private: they only even know it exists thanks to news announcements and photographs posted on the school's official social media accounts. According to Raquel, it is a normal part of the process. Scholar cannot help but wonder if all this secrecy is worthwhile, for they have heard some rumors. Raquel's heard them too, most of them usually taking the form of accusations of the whole thing being a sham or a haven for nepotism.
Tadashi interjects at this point to inform them that Lady Arlington will announce the particulars when classes start. He says that this year will be very different. Raquel tries to get him to say exactly what, but Tadashi shuts her down each time. He is about to enter his own dorm for a quick nap when he turns to Scholar and brusquely advises them to get some more sleep. They take his advice, but Raquel's too excited for anything but training. She leaves for the gym while Scholar waves goodbye to Alistair before returning to their room.
They manage to get another hour of sleep before they have to go to their first class. After dressing, they go to the Science Lab, thankfully a few minutes earlier. The students who have already arrived are chipping away at their assignments, except for four students: Tegan and Ellie looking over some blueprints, Tadashi is on his laptop, and Axel is listening to music. Scholar picks one of them to sit next to.
Before class begins, Scholar learns some more about the Department Competition. The competition is split into three parts: interviews with each individual student, department practice where each department works on their project, then the presentation of those projects. There are two prizes as well, one for the department with the best presentation as decided by a panel of judges and an individual prize for the student with the most audience votes. Thankfully, the student does not need to be in the winning department in order to claim the individual prize. As for the department practice, the seniors come up with a general project outline that the rest of their department help flesh out.
Dr. Wu walks into the Science Lab with Lady Arlington. Once Dr. Wu gets the class settled, Lady Arlington announces the big change that Tadashi hinted at earlier: instead of a small, exclusive audience, the entire competition will be made available to the general public. The school board has heard the rumors and they wish to quash them by allowing the public to view and vote on who gets the department and individual prizes. Because of this, Lady Arlington advises the class to broaden their horizons by interacting with other departments outside of their own. She notifies the members of her own department to check their email and meet up in Classroom 1 then wishes everyone luck before leaving.
As the noise of excited chatter and motion fills the room, Scholar's nerves rise. They are filled with doubts about their own role in the competition. Their thoughts consume them so much that, before they realize it, they are nearly the only one left. Once they snap out of it, they remember that Alistair offered to give them some advice. They catch up with Alistair as he is on his way out. He has to go to the gym, so Scholar asks Alistair their questions as they walk. Most of the advice he gives are things Scholar is already aware of: that the competition is a team effort, so they will not have to come up with something on the spot. Ergo, they should not stress themself out so much. Still, hearing confirmation gives them some comfort.
Once they are at the gym, Scholar and Alistair part ways. Entering the academy's Entrance, Scholar mules over what they have learned so far. While the seniors are the ones mostly in charge, Scholar figures they should at least try to contribute some ideas. Remembering Lady Arlington's advice, they decide it would be worthwhile to check in with the departments to see how they are doing. And with the interviews coming up later that same day, they also think it would be a good idea to find a quiet place where they can prepare.
At this point, you will have to roam around the school. Each department has their own designated location where they are going to practice. When you enter each location, you can choose to visit the department or continue wandering around the campus. In between each department visit, you will have to interact with one or more of the Main 10. It is impossible to meet up with your own department at this time, so be sure to move on directly to where the next of the Main 10 will appear.
The Fine Arts Department meets in the Art Classroom. Scholar is amazed by all the supplies and art projects scattered throughout the room. They catch the eye of Mr. Boss, who makes a good natured attempt at convincing Scholar to transfer to his department, or at least take an art class while they are at the academy. Tyler appears, surprised to see Scholar visiting his department. Mr. Boss suggests that he take Scholar on a short tour around the classroom, to which Tyler complies. During the tour, Scholar's attention is caught by one of Mr. Boss' own paintings. After they are finished walking around the room, Tyler lets Scholar go, pointing out that they would not want to be late to practice. Waving goodbye to one another, Scholar exits the room.
They come across Claire copying some notes in the Cafeteria Lounge. Last year, her department found her notes incrediably useful, so she is making a duplicate notebook for everyone to use in preperation of this year's competition. Scholar invites her to join them on their department tour, but she declines. She still has to mentally prepare for the interviews, and- though she does not say it- she veiws her shyness as a weakness. Scholar raises her morale by suggesting she turn her shyness into an asset, confident that she will manage to get through the interview with flying colors and even win a lot of votes while doing it. Claire thanks Scholar before excusing herself; she is meeting up with Dr. Wu to help her before department practice starts. They wish each other luck before departing from the lounge.
The Performing Arts Department meets in the Auditorium. Soon after entering, Scholar is spotted by Dr. Kim, the head of the department. Scholar walks over to Dr. Kim to explain why they are here. Dr. Kim allows them to talk with their students, but warns them that they will have to leave afterward. They also inform Scholar that their students are not open about their plans, so their visit my prove fruitless. When Scholar looks around the deparment, they have to agree: Axel is not here, and it is quite unlikely that they will get any information from someone they are not familiar with. So, they exit the auditorium to continue their wanderings.
They find Raquel doing some warm ups in the Gym. The upcoming competition has made her too excited to bother with attending class, so she has been training for most of the morning instead. Her competitive streak lives for events like this. Scholar, however, is still having trouble understanding everything. They let slip that thousands of people will be watching which startles Raquel. Because she skipped class, she did not hear Lady Arlington's announcement that the interviews and competition will be livestreamed to the public. Horrified, she checks her phone and sees the email Tadashi sent earlier regarding the details. Muttering curses, she hastily excuses herself before darting out of the gym. Scholar idly wonders why the news shook her up so bad; they hope she will be all right.
The Pure and Applied Sciences Department meets in the Computer Lab. As soon as Scholar walks in, Dr. Lee spots them. She is not bothered by their presence, just surprised; the lab is rather out of the way, so other students do not drop by much. As their conversation continues, Scholar sees that Dr. Lee and Ellie share similiar personalities. Just as Dr. Lee suggests that they head to their own department's practice, Tegan walks in. He shyly greets them both before heading to the back of the room. After saying goodbye to Dr. Lee, Scholar leaves the lab.
Scholar enters Classroom 2 when they spot Karolina in the back, along with two boys. Hiding behind the doorframe, they watch as the two boys make suggestive and crude remarks regarding Karolina's position in the Silver Tier. While she is clearly furious, she hides it behind a veneer of innocent helplessness. She pretends to need their assistance with the math homework and writes the extra credit problem on the room's chalkboard. The two boys argue a bit over which answer is the correct one, until Karolina flawlessly solves the problem by herself. Angered that she got the upper hand, the two boys exit the classroom, leaving Scholar and Karolina alone. They share a look, Karolina's having a hint of sadness, before Scholar leaves themself, thinking she would want to be alone.
They return to the science lab. Scholar explains the reason for their vist to Dr. Wu, who pretends to need a test subject to for the competition. As Scholar becomes somewhat concered, Claire appears to reassure them that Dr. Wu is just teasing. After a brief conversation between Dr. Wu and Claire, Scholar leaves the lab.
At the Outside Cafeteria, Scholar stumbles across Tadashi and Raquel having an urgent conversation. Tadashi is both angry and flabbergasted after listening to Raquel's plea for help. While he does not say exactly what it was that she did, it seems to have been going on for a long time, and taken a lot of steps to set in place. When they move towards Scholar's location, Scholar quickly ducks into the cafeteria lounge where they bump into Tyler. They both have to stiffle screams of surprise as Raquel and Tadashi hurry further into the school. Once they are both out of earshot, Tyler explains that he had come to grap a surgary treat when he came across Raquel and Tadashi. However, he does not know any more about the situation than Scholar does.
Tyler and Scholar chat about the upcoming interviews before the topic swiftly changes to that of the ranking system. While he does not say anything outright, it is clear that Tyler does not look upon the ranking system that fondly. However, his momentary seriousness disappears as soon as it arrived; grabbing a few pastries, Tyler flashes Scholar a salute before leaving the cafeteria. Scholar decides to get back to preparing for the competition as well.
The Fashion Department meets in Classroom 2. The room is in so much disarray that Scholar has to dodge shears, and bolts of cloth in order to move around the room. They wind up colliding into a mannequin. Appearing from behind a rack of coats, Ms. Khan notes that she has not seen them in any of her classes. She is far more curious than upset, but Scholar can still feel her scrunity. After Scholar introduces themself, Ms. Khan allows them to explore the room, but she warns them that her students are very secretive and competitive. Not that it matters; there is no one in the room at the moment except Scholar and Ms. Khan. Scholar bids her goodbye before leaving the room.
In the Garden, Scholar finds Tadashi briefing Tegan, Ellie, Axel, and Neha about Raquel's predicament. Not wanting to interupt, Scholar hides out of sight to eavesdrop. They feel guilty for snooping around so much and wonder whether or not they should leave. If you decide to stay put, the group stays silent, so Tadashi barrels on ahead with assigning who has to do what. Ellie and Axel will prepare an alternative livestream, Tegan will be in charge of uploading it, and Neha will make the props and costumes. The only comments left are in regards to whatever it is Raquel did, though it is revealed to Tadashi that Axel and Tegan were already in the know; in fact, it was Tegan who helped her mess around with the school's records.
Groaning at their audicity, Tadashi nevertheless keeps to his own role of convincing Lady Arlington to delay the interviews. Raquel gives everyone her gratitude for their help despite how last minute it is. Both Ellie and Axel are happy to lend her a hand. Even Neha joins in in giving Raquel her support.
The scene underscores just how supprotive they all are of each other, even though some of them are not exactly friends. It reminds Scholar of how alone they are. Shifting their attention back to the competition, they leave the garden.
In the gym, the Athletics Department has not started their department practice yet. Some of them are up on the bleachers, and judging by Coach Davis' reaction to seeing them there- mainly a sharp yell- they are not supposed to. Before Scholar can beat a hasty retreat, Coach Davis spots them. He does not believe Scholar's explaination regarding Lady Arlington's suggestion, but he does not dismiss them right away. He does respect Scholar's inititive, but he cannot let them stay to see his department's practice; they will be late to their own otherwise. Coach Davis walks away. Scholar takes it to be a dismissal, so they leave.
Scholar comes across Neha in the second hallway, busily jotting down something in her notebook. Since it is rare to see her alone, Scholar would like to talk to her about the competition. However, they do not want to interupt what she is doing. They are about to leave when Neha notices Scholar. A quick exchange follows before Neha returns her attention to her notebook. Scholar makes a remark that Neha misunderstands to be sarcastic. Once that is smoothed over, Neha gives them a genuine smile.
They are amazed that Neha can keep up with the compitetion on top of her schoolwork and business. Neha admits that it can get tiresome, but she cannot afoard to fail. Thought Scholar does their best to reassure her, they can tell she does not want to persue this topic futher. They try to change the subject, but Neha's phone goes off. Shutting off the alarm, Neha picks up her things then walks off. Scholar muses a bit about whatever might be bothering her before leaving the second hallway.
The Business, Commerce, and Politics Department meets in Classroom 1. Papers are scattered everywhere and the students look frantic. Even Lady Arlington seems busy. Moving further into the room, they immediately notice that the students are already organizing, making sure everyone and everything is in its proper place. The largest in the school, Scholar understands the difficulty there must be in figuring out a project that showcases each person's individual skills.
Lady Arlington spots Scholar, correctly guessing that they are there to gather some inspertion. She is pleased that they took her advice, though she notes that her students are preoccupied at the moment. Tadashi appears to notify Lady Arlington that some of the students are ready to review the case studies she gave them. Scholar is surprised to get even this much information. Lady Arlington explains that she believes in full transperency. She plainly lays out what her department's project is, its complexity stunning Scholar and explaining why the students look so hectic. Of course, the main reason why Lady Arlington is confident is because her department has won plenty of Department Compitions before. She trusts her students to do their best, in no small part because she had a hand in training them. Scholar can see why she was given the role of headmaster.
After inquiring as to Scholar's name, Lady Arlington informs them that she will need to coordinate with her students soon. Scholar picks up the hint of a dismissal and goes to leave. However, as they walk out of the classroom, they can feel a pair of eyes staring after them. Keeping their face forward, they elect to ignore whoever is staring and enter the main hallway.
Scholar goes over what they have managed to glean from their visits. Unfortantely, they did not get much, and are not sure how exactly they could help out at their own department's practice. At that thought, they suddenly realize how late its gotten and they rush to their deparment's designated room.
